Mark Herring is a seasoned Compliance Investigator and Master Instructor with over 30 years of dedicated service to the State of North Carolina. His distinguished career spanned 28 years and 4 months in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Section, culminating in his retirement from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in August 2021.

A Career Built on Expertise and Dedication

Mark began his journey in April 1987 with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and brought his career to a close as a respected member of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. His foundational expertise is grounded in an Associate Degree in Auto/Diesel Technology from Nashville Auto Diesel College (1978). Before joining the state, Mark honed his technical and leadership skills as a Diesel Truck Technician, Shop Supervisor, and Maintenance and Safety Supervisor for three motor carriers.

Role in Commercial Vehicle Enforcement

Throughout his career, Mark’s responsibilities included:

  • Enforcing Regulations: Upholding North Carolina State Laws, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), and Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMRs).
  • Conducting Investigations: Leading complex compliance investigations of motor carriers, passenger carriers, and hazardous materials shippers.
  • Training & Education: As a certified instructor with the USDOT National Training Center, Mark trained new roadside truck inspectors and compliance investigation investigators.

Mark represented North Carolina in the North American Inspectors Championship (NAIC) as a participant (1999, 2000, 2001, 2009) and as a judge in 2011. His role as a Master Instructor, certified in 2011, further solidified his status as a leader in the field. This certification allowed him to mentor and evaluate new and certified instructors nationwide.

Mark consistently enhanced his expertise through specialized training at the US DOT/FMCSA National Training Center and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. I worked in the insurance industry for over 35+ years. I was a licensed insurance agent, dedicated and always working hard in assisting people in their personal insurance needs. I became an insurance agent because I am passionate about helping people and I am excited to expand my expertise to a new set of clients. I retired in 2021 to assist my husband Mark in this endeavor to offer the best possible service to our clients. We look forward to the opportunity to educate and train our clients to move towards complete compliance in all areas of their company, while improving their safety record and daily business practices.
